It's remarkable how the power of plant-based nutrition can nurture our bodies and promote overall wellness.

"Cultivate is a fun-spirited restaurant with a completely vegan menu. We sprouted from the love of food and a desire to spread compassion in the restaurant industry. We thrive to serve dishes that are both bursting in flavor and good for the world. Nadeem started cooking at a young age–as a kid, he looked forward for Boy Scout camping trips where he would experiment with recipes for his troop. He began cooking plant-based recipes to accommodate Kaylie's dietary needs, and quickly began to love vegan food. Our goal is to recreate nostalgic flavors in a way that is inclusive and sustainable."
"The concept of Chutzpah Kitchen was conceived by Sagi Ohayon, who was born and raised in Israel and calls Maplewood home. With Chutzpah Kitchen, we intend to bring the flavors and boldness of an Israeli shuk (market) to SOMA and the neighboring areas, with an elevated, fast-casual experience, optimized for takeout and delivery."
A Dominican, woman-owned restaurant serving food with culturally-preserved flavors. Offers a selection of veganized traditional dishes such as tacos, chimi, patacones, and desserts. Even though it may not be a fancy establishment, it's great to know that it's clean and that the food is cooked with love and intention, rather than being rushed like in larger fancy or fast food vegan restaurants.
"Our story starts with a 1999 pink school bus; we scraped together what we had to convert it to a fully functional food truck & opened to a line of customers on April 17, 2017. We spent two summers serving the Scotch Plains community, and through the support of our customers, we opened our first storefront location in Scotch Plains in 2019. Three years later we opened our second location in Metuchen, NJ. We strive to bring together a community of people that take pride in what they eat. We serve food that is sourced locally when in season, organic whenever possible, and 100% vegan."
"The Hidden Chickpea provides healthy, plant-based options. We believe that the basis for a great restaurant is simple: serving high-quality food in a friendly, and inviting atmosphere. We offer a fast-casual dining experience with a customizable menu. We are inclusive of everyone’s dietary choices, and strive to introduce omnivores to the benefits of plant-based diets. We pride ourselves in providing our customers with a unique dining experience."
"We’re on a mission to sweeten your day with ooey, gooey cinnamon rolls that will make your mouth water and your taste buds smile. With over 20 unique frosting flavors and a variety of fresh and decadent toppings, we’re not your typical cinnamon roll dessert shop — we’re a cinnamon roll experience! All of our products are made with the highest quality ingredients, and are 100% plant-based, dairy & lactose-free, egg-free, and cholesterol-free."
"Yellow Rose Vegan is the passion project of Caitlyn Webber and Stephen Tong. At just 22 and 23 years old, the vegan couple launched Yellow Rose Vegan, an online bake shop, in March of 2020. At the height of a global pandemic, the project quickly found its place in the hearts and homes of hundreds of customers across the country, who used Yellow Rose as a way to connect with their loved ones by sending care packages in the form of a neatly twined bakery box. With a Yellow Rose delivery, they could share in the simple delight of a hand-made baked good, while the ability to sit and enjoy one in a neighborhood bakery was put on pause indefinitely. Within 6 months, the remote bakery had grown so much that it was ready for its natural next step -- a storefront! We found our home in Maplewood, NJ, tucked away on a quiet residential block on Ridgewood Road and opened our doors on December 10, 2020. Three years on, the small bake shop continues to serve many of the original recipes featured on yellowrosevegan.com with many new additions making their way into the mix! The full service cafe is a one-stop shop for all things vegan, from sweet to savory, and even coffee and espresso drinks!"
"Johnny Tequila brings you a nuevo latino cuisine with roots in Central and South America , Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Dominican Republic. Ask us to "Make It Vegan". Try our fresh lime juice margarita!"
"Welcome to a vegan Chinese restaurant that goes beyond boundaries! Indulge in a delightful fusion of flavors with an exciting array of sushi, Indian, Thai, and Jamaican dishes. Craving a veggie burger or a falafel sandwich? Look no further! But wait, there's more! Prepare to be tantalized by their heavenly bubble tea and refreshing fresh juices. While the ownership underwent a change in November 2022, you'll be pleased to know that some of the beloved old staff members stayed on board, ensuring a seamless transition and maintaining the restaurant's essence. Step into a casual yet cozy ambiance that invites you to unwind and savor your dining experience."
Top 10 Vegan-Friendly Cities in the World
Last Updated November, 2022
TeamCow is thrilled to offer the first update to our Top 10 Vegan-Friendly Cities List since pre-pandemic 2019. Amidst a chaotic few years for the vegan restaurant community, we are happy to report an uptick in vegan business growth again as of 2022 - pointing to more promising times ahead.
This list is determined using the following criteria from HappyCow's exclusive global database:
- The number of fully vegan restaurants within a 10km radius from each city center
- The number of fully vegan businesses (including shops, bakeries, etc.)
- The number of all restaurants (vegan, vegetarian, veg-friendly) listed on HappyCow in the radius
- The density of vegan businesses per capita
- The growth of vegan businesses since our last report
- Qualitative evaluation from TeamCow, City Ambassadors and the Cowmunity, such as how easy it is to find vegan options, how well veganism is understood, and how active the vegan community is, among other factors.
London's vegan restaurant explosion has continued throughout the past year, making 2021-2022 a big year for veganism in the UK. London was the first city on HappyCow to surpass 200 completely vegan restaurants in 2022 and over 400 fully vegan establishments all in all—including but not limited to restaurants. Presently, London has 165 vegan restaurants in a 10km radius within the city center, 200 all-vegan restaurants citywide. According to The Vegan Society's larger survey, the number of vegans has more than quadrupled since 2014; and currently there are more than 600,000 vegans in the UK, equivalent to 1.16% of the British population. Veganism continues to become a mainstream lifestyle in London, and this city takes veganism to a new level.
The vegan scene in Berlin has continued to grow and thrive despite the last few rough years faced by the world at large. Berlin upholds its reputation as an international vegan destination. The number of vegan restaurants within a 10km radius around Berlin’s city center has hit a milestone of 100! The word "vegan" is visible on restaurant signs throughout the city. Berliners are familiar with the widely accepted and practiced vegan lifestyle, and it is incredibly simple to find options throughout this progressive city.
With its incredibly diverse variety of cuisines, New York is considered by many to be the international food capital of the world. New York's vegan scene continues to flourish, boasting 170 vegan restaurants in a 10km radius of the city.
Known for being Australia’s culinary capital as well as “one of the most liveable cities on earth”, Melbourne is quickly rising in popularity for its multicultural life, excellent coffee, relaxed lifestyle, and you guessed it—vegan food! As of 2022, Melbourne has 130 fully vegan establishments in the Greater Metropolitan Area and a total of 1000 listings on HappyCow, which indicates that several of the non-vegan restaurants in Melbourne have inclusive menus that cater to vegans too.
Singapore has long been a cultural melting pot of ethnic groups, which has made it a foodies’ paradise over time. Vibrant and bustling, yet charming and quirky, this small island country now has over 800 vegan-friendly establishments listed on HappyCow, of which 185 places are 100% vegan. In the last three years alone, Singapore’s “vegan-friendly” ranking has nearly doubled and we’re not surprised—after all, dairy never was a big part of South-East Asian cuisine. This means that a lot of the traditional “vegetarian” food is already plant-based, or if not, can usually be made vegan with minor adjustments.
#6 Los Angeles
Although Los Angeles may be best known for Hollywood celebrities, including a number of vegan ones (Billie Eilish, the NBA's JaVale McGee, Joaquin Phoenix, Alicia Silverstone, and Casey Affleck, to name a few), Los Angeles is also a vegan mecca, boasting 105 fully vegan restaurants in a ten-square-kilometer area—that’s double of what it was three years ago! You won't have any trouble finding delicious healthy (or less-than-healthy) options throughout this large city famous for its wide variety of international vegan cuisines.
Back in the top ten this year is a city in the "Land of Smiles"—the quality and complexity of Thai food can certainly put a smile on any face. Being vegan in Bangkok is a breeze. Tropical fruit stands and fresh markets are plentiful in this city, and, due to its predominantly Buddhist background, most restaurants have solid vegan options on their menu. Traditional Thai cuisine is composed of vegetables, but if eating at a non-vegan restaurant, be sure to tell your server "no fish sauce" as it is a very common ingredient in Thai cuisine. Another tip: if you order something "hot" in Thailand, be prepared for it to light your mouth on fire! The number of purely vegan restaurants, also known as jay food restaurants in Bangkok, has grown substantially the past few years, with 130 fully vegan businesses currently listed on HappyCow in this bustling city, of which 99 are restaurants. Although the majority of vegan restaurants in this city serve Thai cuisine, Bangkok has top quality food, and for westerners, the value is tremendous.
Amsterdam is one of the fastest-growing cities in terms of vegan-friendliness, with a striking 78% growth in just a three-year span. Our data shows us that 50% of this growth happened in 2020 alone, when there was a sudden explosion of vegan restaurants across the city. The number grew from 40 to 60 in just one year, and now, in 2022, Amsterdam has over 100 fully-vegan businesses.
The number of vegan options continues to grow in 2022, with close to 70 vegan restaurants now in a 10km radius, and with most of those within just a 1km radius. The density of vegan restaurants in Warsaw makes it incredibly convenient to walk from restaurant to restaurant. Warsaw's famous vegan burger joint Krowarzywa has now added its eighth new location within the city, based on its success of having repeatedly been voted the "Best Burger in Warsaw," beating out all competing meat burgers, and now carries the famous Beyond Burger, as do several other restaurants in Warsaw.
The rapidly-increasing focus on a healthy and cruelty-free lifestyle in this bustling city has made it feature on this list for the first time ever. Barcelona is seeing an explosion of sustainable markets, conscious brands, and vegan restaurants and bars. Based on our data, there’s been a 74% growth in Barcelona’s vegan scene over a three-year span, which is very impressive and promising, considering Spain’s reputation for meat-heavy cuisine.
